Moon Sign Calculator

What is my Moon sign? Estimate the zodiac sign the Moon was in at your birth using a simplified ephemeris approximation. Enter your birth date, time, and timezone to reveal your inner emotional nature. For entertainment only.

Birth Moment

Locate The Moon

The Moon moves ~13.2° per day, so even a few hours can shift the result near a sign boundary.

UTC

Optional. Hours east of UTC (e.g. New York = -5, London = 0, Karachi = +5).

Approximation Notice

This is an astronomical approximation, not a full ephemeris. For entertainment only — a precise birth chart uses your exact location and a complete lunar ephemeris.

How to use this tool

1
Enter Birth Date

Type the date you were born so the calculator can locate the Moon along the zodiac.

2
Add Birth Time

Because the Moon moves ~13.2 degrees per day, enter your birth time (and UTC offset) for a sharper estimate.

3
Read Your Moon Sign

Instantly see your approximate Moon sign, its element, and a short description of its emotional nature.

Pro Tip

If your result lands in the first or last few degrees of a sign, you may be on a lunar cusp - shift the birth time by an hour to see whether the sign flips.

What The Moon Rules

Where the Sun sign describes your outer identity, your Moon sign is said to govern your inner emotional world — instincts, comfort needs, and how you react when no one is watching.

Why Time Matters

The Moon changes sign roughly every 2.3 days. If your birth time falls near a boundary, try adjusting the hour to see whether you sit on a cusp between two signs.

For Entertainment Only

Moon sign results are produced with a simplified astronomical model and are intended purely for fun and self-reflection. A full ephemeris and a professionally cast birth chart will be more precise, especially near sign boundaries.

What Your Moon Sign Actually Describes

If the Sun sign is the role you play on stage, the Moon sign is what happens backstage. In astrology the Moon governs your emotional reflexes: how you self-soothe, what makes you feel secure, and the instinctive way you react before logic catches up. Two people with the same Sun sign can feel like completely different personalities once you know their Moon — one a calm, comfort-seeking Taurus Moon, the other a restless, freedom-hungry Sagittarius Moon.

Our Moon Sign Calculator estimates this placement from your birth date, birth time, and an optional UTC offset. Because the Moon is the fastest-moving body in the sky, time genuinely matters here in a way it does not for your Sun sign.

The Astronomy Behind the Estimate

The Moon travels through all twelve zodiac signs in about 27.3 days. That works out to roughly 13.2 degrees of ecliptic longitude per day, and since each sign spans 30 degrees, the Moon switches signs about every 2.3 days.

To approximate its position, the calculator counts the days elapsed since the J2000 epoch (1 January 2000, 12:00 UT) and feeds that into a simplified lunar longitude formula:

  • A mean longitude that advances ~13.176° per day,
  • plus the largest periodic correction (the equation of the centre, ~6.3°),
  • plus two smaller terms for evection and latitude effects.

The resulting longitude is divided by 30 and mapped to a sign (0–30° = Aries, 30–60° = Taurus, and so on). This captures the Moon's sign correctly in the vast majority of cases, but it deliberately omits the dozens of tiny perturbation terms a full ephemeris uses — so treat results near a cusp as a coin-flip rather than a verdict.

Worked Example

Say you were born on 15 June 1995 at 12:00, UTC+0.

  1. Days since J2000: roughly −1661 days (because 1995 is before the year 2000).
  2. Mean longitude works out near 292°, and after adding the periodic correction terms the Moon's longitude lands close to 297°.
  3. Dividing 297 by 30 gives index 9 (the 10th sign, counting from 0), which maps to Capricorn.

So this birth moment yields an approximate Capricorn Moon — emotions kept disciplined, self-reliant, and quietly ambitious. Nudge the birth time forward by a day or two and the longitude climbs past 300°, eventually tipping into Aquarius territory: a vivid illustration of why the Moon's speed makes timing so important.

Reading Cusps and Edge Cases

If your result sits in the first or last couple of degrees of a sign (the calculator shows your "position in sign" out of 30), you are effectively on a lunar cusp. Try shifting the birth time by an hour or two, or correct your UTC offset, and watch whether the sign flips. When it does, you have learned something real: your placement is borderline, and only a precise birth chart can settle it.

You can compare this with your daytime identity using our Zodiac & Astrology Profile Calculator to see how your inner Moon and outer Sun signs interact.

A Note on Accuracy and Intent

This tool is built for curiosity and self-reflection, not prediction. The longitude math is genuine astronomy, but the personality interpretations are for entertainment only. A professional astrologer using a full ephemeris and your exact birthplace will give a more authoritative reading, particularly for borderline placements. Enjoy the result, share it with friends, and take the meaning as lightly as the Moon takes its 27-day stroll across the sky.
