Chinese Zodiac Calculator
Discover your Chinese zodiac animal and ruling element from your birth date. Accounts for the Chinese New Year cut-off so early-year births get the correct lunar sign, then reveals your traits and most compatible animals. For entertainment.
Birth Date
Find Your Animal & Element
The full date matters: the Chinese New Year falls in late January or mid-February, so early-year births can belong to the previous animal.
Your sign is fixed by the lunar year of your birth, cycling through 12 animals and 5 elements every 60 years.
For Fun Only
Chinese zodiac readings are a cultural tradition meant for entertainment and self-reflection, not a prediction of your future.

What the Chinese Zodiac Calculator Does
The Chinese zodiac, or shengxiao, is one of the oldest systems of self-reflection in the world. Instead of mapping the Sun across constellations like Western astrology, it assigns every lunar year one of twelve animals and one of five elements. Our Chinese Zodiac Calculator takes your birth date and instantly returns your animal sign, your ruling element, your yin-yang polarity, and the animals you are traditionally most compatible with. It is a fast, shareable way to explore a tradition that has shaped culture across East Asia for more than two thousand years.
The Twelve Animals and Why Your Birth Date Matters
The twelve animals cycle in a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each rules a full lunar year. The catch is that the lunar year does not begin on January 1st. The Chinese New Year lands somewhere between January 21st and February 20th, depending on the moon. This is why simply using your calendar year can mislead you: a person born on February 3rd, 2025, was actually born before the 2025 New Year (January 29th, 2025), so they belong to the previous lunar year and carry a different animal. Our calculator detects these early-year births and adjusts automatically.
The Five Elements Add Depth
Layered on top of the animals is the cycle of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element governs two consecutive years, so the last digit of your zodiac year reveals it: years ending in 0 or 1 are Metal, 2 or 3 are Water, 4 or 5 are Wood, 6 or 7 are Fire, and 8 or 9 are Earth. Because twelve animals and five elements interlock, your exact pairing — say, a Water Tiger or an Earth Dog — only repeats once every sixty years. That sixty-year grand cycle is the heartbeat of the traditional calendar.
Worked Example: Born February 3rd, 2025
Suppose your birthday is February 3rd, 2025.
- Check the New Year date. The 2025 Chinese New Year was January 29th. Your birthday (February 3rd) is after it, so your zodiac year stays 2025.
- Find the animal. 2025 is the Year of the Snake — wise, intuitive, and graceful.
- Find the element. The year ends in 5, which maps to Wood.
- Result: You are a Wood Snake, a yin sign known for calm strategy and quiet creativity.
Now contrast a birthday of February 3rd, 2024. The 2024 New Year was February 10th, so a February 3rd birth falls before it. The zodiac year rolls back to 2023 — the Year of the Water Rabbit — not the 2024 Wood Dragon you might expect. This single example shows exactly why the full date, not just the year, drives the result.
Compatibility and the Harmonious Trine
Tradition groups the twelve animals into four "trines," each containing three signs that share a temperament and tend to get along beautifully. The Snake, for instance, harmonizes with the Ox and Rooster. Our calculator lists your most compatible animals so you can compare with friends and family. Treat these as a lighthearted lens rather than relationship law — plenty of happy partnerships pair "incompatible" signs.
A Note on Spirit and Intent
The Chinese zodiac is a cultural tradition meant for entertainment, storytelling, and gentle self-reflection. It is not a forecast of your future or a measure of your worth. Enjoy it as a way to connect with heritage and spark conversation. If you also love star-sign astrology, compare your result here with your Sun sign using our Zodiac & Astrology Calculator, or pinpoint the exact day you were born with the Day of Birth Finder. Whatever animal and element you carry, the cycle is a reminder that every year brings its own character — and so do you.
