Why It Changes
Most home connections use a dynamic IP that can change when your router restarts. A VPN or proxy replaces it with the server's address — refresh after connecting one to confirm it worked.
What Your IP Address Actually Is
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the identifier that lets data find its way to and from your connection. When you load a page, your request carries your public IP so the server knows where to send the response. This tool reads that address back to you and shows it large and clearly, with a one-tap copy button. It also fetches your IPv6 address when your network has one, so you can see both forms of your address side by side.
Public IP vs. Local IP — The Key Distinction
This is the point people most often confuse. The number shown here is your public IP: a single address your internet service provider assigns to your whole connection, and the only one the wider internet sees. The address your laptop or phone uses inside your home — typically 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x — is a local IP handed out by your router. Browsers deliberately cannot read your local IP for privacy reasons, so no website (including this one) can display it. If you need your LAN IP, check your operating system's network settings instead.
IPv4 and IPv6 Explained
The classic format, IPv4, looks like 203.0.113.42 — four numbers from 0 to 255. The world ran short of these, so IPv6 was introduced, using longer hexadecimal addresses like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334. Many networks now run both at once. If the tool shows only an IPv4, your connection is simply reaching the internet over IPv4, which remains the norm on a large share of home and mobile networks.
Why You'd Want to Check It
Knowing your public IP is useful in plenty of everyday situations:
- Confirming a VPN works — connect your VPN, refresh, and check that the IP (and often the country) has changed.
- Allow-listing — some work tools, databases or game servers ask you to whitelist your IP for access.
- Remote access — pointing a remote desktop, camera or self-hosted service at your home requires your current public IP.
- Troubleshooting — support teams frequently ask for your IP to diagnose connectivity or blocking issues.
What Your IP Can and Can't Reveal
An IP maps to a rough geographic region and your provider's name, which is how sites guess your country for language or currency. It does not expose your name, your street address, or what you're doing online. Only your provider can tie an IP to a specific subscriber, and only under proper legal process. So while it's worth understanding, your public IP alone is closer to a postal region than a home address.
