Why Track Walking Speed at All?

Walking is the most underrated workout there is, and pace is the single number that tells you whether a stroll is actually doing anything for your fitness. Health guidance generally treats brisk walking — around 4 mph (6.4 km/h) — as moderate-intensity exercise, while an easy amble sits well below that. The trouble is that "brisk" feels different on a flat pavement than it does up a hill, and your sense of effort is a poor speedometer. This walking speed tracker removes the guesswork by reading your phone's GPS and showing your live speed, your pace per km and per mile, the distance you've covered, and how long you've been walking.

How the GPS Measurement Works

The tracker uses your browser's geolocation in high-accuracy mode and watches your position continuously. Each update gives a latitude, longitude, an accuracy radius, and — on most phones — a speed value straight from the GPS hardware. When that hardware speed is available it is the most reliable source, so the tool uses it directly. When it is missing (some devices report null), the tracker computes speed itself using the haversine formula, which finds the great-circle distance between your last two fixes, then divides that distance by the time elapsed between them.

Walking is the hardest activity to track precisely, precisely because it is slow. A typical phone GPS is accurate to about 3–10 metres. At 50 mph in a car, that error is trivial. At 3 mph you cover only about 1.3 metres per second, so the same error can momentarily double or halve a reading. Three things help a lot:

  • Walk in the open. Tall buildings, dense tree cover, and tunnels reflect or block satellite signals.
  • Give it a head start. Let the tracker settle for 15–30 seconds before trusting the live figure.
  • Keep the screen awake. If the page is backgrounded, the browser may throttle location updates.

A Worked Example

Say you walk a measured loop and the tracker shows 2.10 km covered in 24 minutes 30 seconds (1,470 seconds). Your average speed is 2,100 m ÷ 1,470 s = 1.43 m/s, which the tool displays as about 5.1 km/h (3.2 mph). Converting to pace: 1,470 s ÷ 2.10 km ≈ 700 seconds per km, or 11:40 per km (about 18:46 per mile). That sits just under the brisk threshold — a small push to 5.2 km/h would tip the same walk into moderate-intensity territory.
