The Formula Behind the Numbers
The estimate rests on one simple relationship applied to two materials:
Bags needed = ⌈ (Area × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ Coverage per bag ⌉
The square-bracket symbols mean "round up," because adhesive and grout are sold only in whole sealed bags. The calculator runs this twice — once with your adhesive coverage and once with your grout coverage — so the two counts are independent.
Why Coverage Per Bag Is the Number That Matters
The most common estimating mistake is treating a bag as a fixed-area product. It isn't. A 25kg bag of cement-based thinset covers roughly 95 ft² at a 1/4-inch notch, but the same bag covers far less as the notch deepens:
- 1/4" square notch — small to medium tile, flat substrate: ~90-100 ft²
- 3/8" notch — medium tile, slight unevenness: ~70-80 ft²
- 1/2" notch — large-format tile, back-buttering: ~50-70 ft²
That is why the coverage figure is an editable input, not a hidden constant. Match it to your trowel and tile and the bag count becomes genuinely accurate.
A Worked Example: Tiling a 200 ft² Floor
Say you are laying 12x24 porcelain over a 200 ft² kitchen floor with a 1/2-inch notch trowel, and you want a 10% waste buffer because the slab has a few low spots.
- Effective area: 200 × 1.10 = 220 ft²
- Adhesive: with a 1/2" notch, coverage drops to about 70 ft² per bag, so 220 ÷ 70 = 3.14 → 4 bags
- Grout: at 120 ft² per bag, 220 ÷ 120 = 1.83 → 2 bags
If adhesive is $18 a bag and grout is $14, the material total is (4 × $18) + (2 × $14) = $72 + $28 = $100. Change the notch to 1/4" and the same floor only needs 3 adhesive bags — a real saving that shows why the coverage input matters.
Practical Tips for an Accurate Order
- Measure the real area, not the room. Subtract cabinets, islands, and fixtures that won't be tiled, but add a separate figure for any walls or backsplashes.
- Back-buttering eats material. Large-format tile usually needs adhesive on both the floor and the tile back for full coverage — push your waste buffer to 15%.
- Buy grout and adhesive together but count them apart. They cover very different areas; ordering equal quantities almost always leaves you short on one.
- Check the slab first. If your floor needs leveling, run the concrete calculator for the screed before you estimate adhesive.
