The Formula Behind Plaster Estimation
Cement plaster quantity follows a clear, four-step calculation that the tool runs instantly:
Wet volume = Wall area × Thickness (in feet) Dry volume = Wet volume × 1.27 Cement volume = Dry volume × (1 ÷ total parts) Sand volume = Dry volume × (sand parts ÷ total parts)
The 1.27 factor is the key detail most DIYers miss. Wet mortar is denser than its loose dry ingredients, so you always need about 27% more dry material than the finished wet volume. Once the cement volume is known, the tool divides it by 1.25 cu.ft per 50 kg bag and rounds up to whole bags — because you can't buy a fraction of a bag.
A Worked Example: Plastering a 150 sq.ft Wall
Suppose you're plastering a wall of 150 sq.ft at the standard interior thickness of 0.5 inches, using a 1:4 cement-to-sand mix.
- Thickness in feet: 0.5 ÷ 12 = 0.0417 ft
- Wet volume: 150 × 0.0417 = 6.25 cu.ft
- Dry volume: 6.25 × 1.27 = 7.94 cu.ft
- Cement volume: 7.94 × (1 ÷ 5) = 1.59 cu.ft → 1.59 ÷ 1.25 = 1.27 → 2 bags (rounded up)
- Sand volume: 7.94 × (4 ÷ 5) = 6.35 cu.ft
So a single 150 sq.ft wall needs roughly 2 cement bags and 6.4 cu.ft of sand. If a bag costs your local rate and sand is priced per cubic foot, the tool adds both into a total project cost automatically.
Choosing the Right Mix Ratio
The ratio you pick changes the strength, durability, and price of the plaster:
- 1:3 — rich and strong, best for external walls, plinths, and damp areas.
- 1:4 — the everyday choice for internal walls and ceilings.
- 1:5 or 1:6 — leaner and cheaper, suitable for brick masonry that stays protected.
A richer mix uses more cement, resists cracking and moisture better, but raises your bill. Match the ratio to where the surface is and what it has to withstand.
Practical Tips for Accurate Ordering
- Measure net area. Subtract large windows and doors from your wall area before entering it, or you'll over-order.
- Set thickness honestly. Rough block walls often need 15–20 mm, not 12 mm — under-estimating thickness is the top cause of running short.
- Add a waste buffer. Spillage and uneven walls waste 5–15% of material; the bag rounding helps, but add ~10% to sand for big jobs.
- Buy sand by volume. Sand is usually sold by the cubic foot, ton, or trolley — convert the cu.ft figure to your supplier's unit.
