Split Table — cumulative target at each km
The cumulative column is your wristwatch target — glance at it at each marker. Aim to be a few seconds ahead in the back half so a strong finish, not a fade, gets you under your goal time.
These are even (flat-course) splits. On hilly routes, plan to run uphill miles slightly slower and bank the time on the descents so your average pace still lands on target.
From a Goal Time to a Race Plan
Most runners know their target marathon time long before they know how to actually run it. A goal of "sub-4 hours" or "3:30" is meaningless on race morning unless it is translated into a pace you can feel and a set of checkpoints you can verify. This marathon pace and split calculator does both: enter your target finish time and race distance, and it returns the exact pace per kilometre and per mile, plus a full split table showing the cumulative clock time you should see at every marker. Work the other direction too — enter a pace you can hold and it predicts your finish time.
The Two Calculations It Runs
Everything here comes from one relationship between time, distance, and pace:
Pace = Finish time ÷ Distance Finish time = Pace × Distance
In From Time mode, you supply the finish time and the tool divides by the distance. In From Pace mode, you supply the pace and it multiplies up. A marathon is 42.195 km (26.219 miles), so a 3:30:00 goal is 12,600 seconds ÷ 42.195 = 4:59 per km, or 8:01 per mile. Those are the numbers you rehearse in training until they feel automatic.
Reading the Split Table
The split table is the part you actually use on race day. Each row is a marker — kilometre 1, kilometre 2, and so on — and the cumulative column is the running-clock time you should see at that marker if you hold even pace. The final row is the fractional finish segment (42.195 km, or 21.0975 km for a half), so the last number is your goal time exactly. Rather than doing mental math at mile 18 with a tired brain, you glance at your watch and compare it to the table. Ahead of schedule means you have a cushion; behind means it is time to reassess.
A Worked Example: The 3:45 Marathon
Suppose your goal is 3:45:00. Enter 3 hours, 45 minutes, select FULL, and keep the split table in kilometres. The tool returns 5:20 per km (8:35 per mile) at an average speed of 11.3 km/h. The cumulative column tells you to cross 10 km at 53:20, the half at 1:52:30, 30 km at 2:40:00, and the line at 3:45:00. Print or screenshot that column and you have a pacing band for the whole race.
Accuracy Notes That Matter
These splits are mathematically even, but two real-world factors shift them:
- GPS over-measurement. Courses are certified along the tangents — the shortest legal path. Your watch adds distance on every curve and whenever it drifts near tall buildings, so most runners log 42.4–43.0 km. To finish on the official clock you must run slightly faster than the even-split pace; plan for about 1–2% extra. A live GPS speedometer can show how much your recorded pace fluctuates around the target.
- Course profile. Hills, heat, and headwinds break even pacing. On a rolling course, deliberately run uphill segments a few seconds slower and recover the time on descents so your average still matches the table — chasing an exact split up a climb burns matches you will want later.
