The Science of the Leap Year

It takes the Earth approximately 365.2422 days to complete one full orbit around the Sun. This is known as a "tropical year." If we only had 365 days in a year, we would lose about 0.2422 days (roughly 6 hours) every year.

• The Drift: Without an adjustment, our calendar would drift by about 24 days every century. Eventually, the Northern Hemisphere would be celebrating Christmas in the middle of summer!

The History of the "Leap"

The Complex 400-Year Exception

To be perfectly precise, not every year divisible by 4 is a leap year. The rule is as follows:

• A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4.
• HOWEVER, if the year is divisible by 100, it is NOT a leap year...
• UNLESS the year is also divisible by 400.

This is why the year 1900 was a common year (365 days), but the year 2000 was a leap year (366 days). The year 2100 will also be a common year. This fine-tuning ensures our calendar remains accurate for thousands of years.
