Estimate Insulation Without the Guesswork

Buying insulation is one of those jobs where a rough guess costs real money — too little and you make a second trip mid-install, too much and bags of batts sit unused in the garage. This insulation calculator turns three simple numbers — the area you're insulating, the coverage printed on each pack, and a waste allowance — into the exact number of packs to buy and an optional material cost. It works for fiberglass batts, mineral wool, and rolls, and reminds you which R-value to aim for in each part of the home.

The Formula Behind the Estimate

The whole calculation is one clean line:

Packs = ceil( Area × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100) ÷ Coverage per pack )

You take the square footage, inflate it by the waste percentage to cover trimming and offcuts, divide by how much one pack covers, and round up to the next whole pack — because nobody sells you two-thirds of a bag. The optional cost is simply Packs × Price per pack.

A Worked Example: Insulating a Bedroom

Say you're insulating the four exterior walls of a bedroom with a net area of 500 sqft after subtracting the window and door. You've chosen fiberglass batts that cover 40 sqft per bag, and you add a 10% waste buffer for cutting around studs and an electrical outlet.

  • Adjusted area: 500 × 1.10 = 550 sqft
  • Raw packs: 550 ÷ 40 = 13.75
  • Rounded up: 14 packs

At $45 per bag, that's 14 × $45 = $630 in material. The calculator also shows that 14 packs actually cover 560 sqft, leaving a small, healthy overage of 60 sqft — enough to redo a botched cut without another store run.

Choosing the Right R-Value

R-value measures how well insulation resists heat flow, and the right target depends on where it goes:

  • Exterior walls: R-13 to R-21
  • Attic / ceiling: R-30 to R-38 (go higher in cold climates)
  • Floors and crawlspaces: R-19 to R-25

A higher R-value usually means a thicker batt, which can change how many square feet fit in each pack — so pick your R-value first, then read the coverage off that specific product and enter it into the tool.

Practical Tips for an Accurate Order

  • Match batt width to your framing. Use 15-inch batts for 16-inch on-center studs and 23-inch batts for 24-inch spacing so the insulation friction-fits without gaps.
  • Don't compress it. Stuffing a thick batt into a thin cavity destroys its R-value. Buy the thickness rated for your wall depth.
  • Account for the attic differently. Attics are often blown-in or use long rolls; for batts across joists, measure the floor area and treat it like any other surface.
  • Bump waste to 15% for attics with angled rafters or rooms crowded with pipes and wiring.
