Most online speedometers assume you are the thing moving. Drone and FPV pilots are different: you stand still while your aircraft does the flying. This drone speed tracker turns your phone into a GPS speed instrument you can carry, mount on a chase vehicle, or use to benchmark conditions at the field — reading live speed in mph or km/h, capturing peak speed, and keeping a tappable session log for each pass.

The single most important rule is also the easiest to forget: the phone measures the phone. It reads the speed of wherever the handset physically is. If it's in your pocket on the launch pad, it reads zero no matter how fast your quad is screaming overhead. Keep that in mind and the tool becomes genuinely useful in several ways below.

Three Real Ways Pilots Use This Tool

  • Chase and follow shots. Mount the phone on the car, bike or boat that's keeping pace with the drone for a tracking shot. The readout tells you how fast the vehicle is moving, so you can match it to the drone's cruise speed for smooth footage.
  • Ground-speed benchmarking. Walk or drive a known segment to confirm your GPS fix quality and accuracy before you trust onboard telemetry numbers.
  • Wind and field checks. A handheld pass into and across the breeze, compared against a calm reading, gives a rough feel for conditions that will eat into your flight time and range.

How The Speed Is Calculated

The tracker first asks the browser for the GPS-reported velocity (coords.speed), which most modern phones provide directly from the Doppler shift of satellite signals — that's more accurate than position differencing. When a device returns no native speed, the tool falls back to the haversine distance between two consecutive fixes divided by the time between them. Either way, fixes worse than ~50 m accuracy are discarded, and readings under 0.3 m/s are clamped to zero to kill hover drift.

Accuracy Notes You Should Trust

Consumer phone GPS is honest but coarse. Realistically:

  • Horizontal accuracy outdoors is typically 3–10 m; the live display shows your current figure as ±metres.
  • The browser updates roughly once per second, so a 2-second burst at top speed may only land one or two samples — brief peaks read low.
  • Tall trees, your own body, car roofs and metal fences degrade the fix. Hold the phone high with a clear view of the sky.

Because of these limits, treat the number as a solid estimate within a few mph, not a calibrated radar gun.

A Worked Example: Clocking A Chase Car

Say you're flying a cinematic follow shot and want the car to hold a steady cruise. You strap the phone to the dashboard, press Start GPS, and watch the accuracy settle to ±5 m. The driver builds up to a comfortable pace and you tap Log on a clean straight: the entry shows 34 mph, peak 36, ±5 m. You drive the same line a second time and log 35 mph. Two readings within 1 mph tell you the fix is reliable and the car can confidently match the drone's 35 mph cruise for the next take — no guesswork, no radar.
