The Formula Behind the Count
Every block estimate is built on one idea — how many block faces fit into the wall face:
Wall area = Length × Height Blocks = ⌈ (Wall area ÷ Block face area) × (1 + Waste %) ⌉
The default block face area is 0.888 sqft, which is the standard 16×8 inch CMU including its 3/8 inch mortar joint (16 × 8 = 128 in² ÷ 144 = 0.888 ft²). Because you can only buy whole blocks, the result is always rounded up.
The waste percentage matters more than it looks. Concrete blocks chip on the corners, arrive cracked on the bottom of the pallet, and get sacrificed every time you cut one to length at a window jamb or the end of a course. A 5% buffer covers a clean rectangular wall; raise it for anything with returns, piers, or curves.
Mortar: The Step Most People Forget
Blocks are only half the order — they have to be bonded. A reliable field estimate is 33 standard blocks per 80 lb bag of mortar mix:
Mortar bags = ⌈ Blocks ÷ 33 ⌉
This figure also rounds up, because a partial bag still means buying a full one. Mortar coverage varies with joint thickness and how generously your mason butters each block, so treat the result as a confident starting point and keep one extra bag on hand. Hot, dry weather also stiffens mortar faster, which can nudge consumption up on long pours.
A Worked Example: A 20 ft × 8 ft Garden Wall
Say you're building a boundary wall that is 20 ft long and 8 ft high.
- Wall area: 20 × 8 = 160 sqft.
- Raw block count: 160 ÷ 0.888 = 180.2 blocks.
- Add 5% waste: 180.2 × 1.05 = 189.2 → round up to 190 blocks.
- Mortar: 190 ÷ 33 = 5.76 → round up to 6 bags.
- Cost: at $2.50 per block, 190 × $2.50 = $475 in blocks, plus your mortar.

Practical Tips From the Job Site
- Measure the real block. Half-blocks, 12-inch wide CMUs, and metric blocks all have different face areas. Override the 0.888 default if yours differs.
- Account for corners. Corner and bond-beam blocks are specialty units — count them separately and deduct from your standard total.
- Buy mortar by the bag, not the shovel. Mixing ratios matter; one extra bag is cheap insurance against a half-finished course.
- Stage the delivery. A pallet of 90 blocks weighs over 3,000 lbs. Confirm your site can take the load before it arrives.
